Your customers say your work is good. Then you type what you do into Google, add “Winnipeg” or “near me,” and you’re nowhere. A competitor with worse reviews and a thinner offer sits at the top of the map instead.<\/p>\n

Google isn’t judging the quality of your work. It ranks what it can confirm about a business, and for most invisible businesses that isn’t much: an unclaimed profile, a website that never says plainly what you do or where, and a few old reviews.<\/p>\n

Put those numbers together and the problem is clear enough. People check a business online before they call, the top few results get almost all the clicks, and hardly anyone reaches page two. What matters is becoming one of the businesses Google is confident enough to show.<\/p>\n

Why don’t I show up when people search?<\/h2>\n

Because Google can’t verify much about you yet. When someone searches “furnace repair Winnipeg,” Google wants to show a business it’s sure exists, does furnace repair, and is nearby. A missing profile, a vague website, or three different phone numbers floating around online each give it a reason to pick someone else. You aren’t being penalised for anything; a competitor gave Google more to work with.<\/p>\n

Paid ads and the map pack work differently<\/h2>\n

Ads rent you the top slot for as long as you keep paying per click. Underneath them sits the map pack, the small map with three businesses, and you can’t buy your way into it. You earn it, and it costs nothing to appear there.<\/p>\n

Ads have their place. If you don’t appear in the map pack for the things you sell, though, you’re paying to cover a gap you could close for free.<\/p>\n

Think about how the search plays out. A pipe bursts in St. Vital at nine on a Sunday night, and someone types “plumber near me” or “plumber St. Vital open now.” The map pack shows three names with star ratings, distances and an “Open now” tag, and one of them gets the call before anyone scrolls further. Those three aren’t necessarily the best plumbers in the area; they’re the three Google was most sure about.<\/p>\n

Google weighs three things: whether it’s sure what you do (relevance), how close you are to the person searching (proximity), and how established you look (prominence). You can’t move your shop closer to every customer, but most of the rest is in your hands.<\/p>\n
