They secure the infrastructure. You secure everything you put on it. If someone resets your email password, they can reset every other account linked to it. Go to your account security settings and turn on 2FA today. This applies whether your data is stored locally or in the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that using a reputable cloud provider actually helps your PIPEDA compliance \u2014 not hurts it. Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 are both PIPEDA-compliant and provide the data processing agreements and security controls you need.<\/p>\n<div class=\"warning\">\n<div class=\"warning-icon\">\u26a0\ufe0f<\/div>\n<p><strong>One thing to know:<\/strong> PIPEDA requires that you know where your data is stored geographically. Some cloud plans store data in US data centres by default. If this matters for your industry or clients, check your plan settings \u2014 both Google and Microsoft offer Canadian data residency options on certain plans.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>The honest bottom line<\/h2>\n<p>The cloud is not perfectly safe \u2014 nothing is. But for the vast majority of Winnipeg small businesses, moving to a reputable cloud platform is a significant security upgrade over what most are currently doing.<\/p>\n<p>The risks that exist are almost entirely in your control \u2014 passwords, two-factor authentication, access management, phishing awareness. These aren&#8217;t technical problems that require an IT department. They&#8217;re habits that any business owner can develop.<\/p>\n<p>The businesses that get into trouble are not the ones who moved to the cloud. They&#8217;re the ones who moved to the cloud and assumed the provider was handling everything.
